In 2009, Cody (in the picture to the left being hugged by Leggo) was diagnosed with a fatal liver disorder. Treatments slowed the progression of the disease but he lost the fight on Friday, August 6, 2010. Cody was humanely euthanized, he slipped peacefully away in the arms of his friends and loved ones. Cody spent much of his free time wandering the hospital, drinking from his favorite bowl-the toilet, and staring out the windows to watch the birds at the feeders. He would often greet clients as they came into the hospital, and he was always good at helping people cope with the loss of their pets. Children especially became instantly bonded with Cody…and the feeling was mutual. There was a protective side to Cody that we all noticed. If one of us was holding another animal that would start to growl or get aggressive-Cody would come over and try to take them on. Size did not matter to him-it could be a Great Dane, or just another cat. He loved his girls.

In the few years that we had Cody, his unusual appetite for anything from Cheez-its, to cheddar popcorn, to the many handfuls of treats that we gave him, always kept him seeking a handout. You needed to keep an eye on your food… or he would be there trying to steal it! Over time his infatuation for crunchy food (despite having lost all his teeth), and his zealousness to protect his girls, earned him the nick name of the “toothless wonder”. No front claws and no teeth, but he was ready to defend!
We will always have a spot in our heart for our “toothless wonder”. |
